Spring is the Most Dangerous Time for Wildfires in West Erie County

Did you know that Spring is the most dangerous time of year for wildfires here in Erie?
According to Department of Conservation and Natural Resources statistics, “63 percent of all wildfires have taken place between the months of March and May. April, meanwhile, represents 42 percent of all blazes.” SERVPRO of West Erie County is here to give you some tips on how to stay safe from fires this Spring.
The rise in fires is mainly due to an increase in outside pit fires. The weather breaks and people want to get outside and cook on a fire. However, spring brings high winds mixed with budding trees. This is the perfect recipe for the ignition of dry grass and brush.
So, what can you do as an Erie resident to prevent wild or forest fires in your area this Spring? Here’s what to watch for.
- Be careful. Have water always with you and clear the area of any fuels that can increase the fire to combust.
- Cigarettes, cookouts, and sparks from equipment cause a small percentage of wildfires, but nevertheless, need monitored and attention.
- Children have caused hundreds of acres of wildfire damage, throughout the years, due to fireworks, lighters and others fire related games gone wrong.
